The retail industry is more active on Twitter than most industries.
According to a retail index released by SocialRank today gauging retailers’ Twitter followings and engagement, 58.1 percent of retailers tweeted in the last 90 days, a figure that puts them behind the 63.6 percent of technology start-ups that have recently tweeted, but ahead of the 49.8 percent of leading global brands, 54.7 percent of technology media firms and 50.8 percent of technology companies that have tweeted lately.
It took Bag Snobs' Tina Craig and Kelly Cook nearly a decade to figure out that the key to transforming from blogger to fully realized brand lies in the realm of retail. And apart from the The Blonde Salad's Chiara Ferragni and perhaps a handful of others, few have been able to make the leap from their blogs and Instagram pages into multimillion-dollar businesses.
THE C-SUITE needs to prepare for the revenge of the nerds. Retail's next generation of chief executive officers—as well as the directors to whom they report—will more likely to come from the world of technology. And the CEO's will be more apt to ask the right questions than provide all of the answers.
